ARLINGTON, Texas - The Dallas Cowboys teamed up with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington to create a "Fitness Zone" for the youth at the North Elm Street club. Cowboys Linebackers DeMarcus Ware and Bradie James helped unveil the "Fitness Zone" which is a refurbishment of their existing gymnasium underwritten by Gene and Jerry Jones Family Charities and Gene and Jerry Jones Family Arlington Youth Foundation. The refurbishment and new "Fitness Zone" included: paint, wall mats, bleachers, refinished gym floor, score board, chin-up bars, wall ladder, high step trainer, Volleyball game stands, in-line hockey goal, pro down box, fitness DVDs and other general fitness equipment.
The Dallas Cowboys "Fitness Zone" is part of the National Football League's Play 60 initiative designed to tackle childhood obesity and inspire kids to play well and eat better. The goal of Play 60's "Fitness Zone" is to give youth new spaces to play and be active. Childhood Obesity rates have more than tripled in the last three decades in our country. Among Texas children ages 6-18, more than 25% are considered overweight or obese. In 2007, more than 28 "Fitness Zones" were built in NFL markets which included playground builds, indoor gymnasium refurbishments, walking and activity trails and interactive fitness technology systems. The NFL and Dallas Cowboys are committed to making the next generation of youth the most active and healthy.
Since 1959, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington has served as a positive, safe place where disadvantage children ages 6 to 18 experience guidance-oriented character development programs conducted by a full-time professional staff. Boys & Girls Club programs emphasize leadership development, education and career exploration, financial literacy, health and life skills, the arts, sports, fitness and recreation, and family outreach. Today, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington operates five neighborhood braches, 13 after school sites, and impacts 8,000 kids each year.
